The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is structured as a publicly funded healthcare system, designed to provide comprehensive health services to residents.
It operates primarily through four distinct entities, each corresponding to one of the UK’s constituent countries: NHS England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland. Why was the Personalised Care Institute established?
The Personalised Care Institute (PCI) was established by NHS England in Sep 2020 to enhance the delivery of personalised care across England. Its primary aim is to provide healthcare professionals with the necessary training and resources to effectively implement personalised care approaches, which focus on tailoring healthcare services to meet the individual needs and preferences of patients.
The PCI was created in response to the growing demand for a more individualized approach to healthcare, which aligns with the NHS’s commitment to patient-centred care, ultimately leading to improved patient experiences and outcomes.
By offering accredited training programs and resources, the Personalised Care Institute helps healthcare professionals develop the skills needed to engage with patients on a personal level, understand their unique circumstances, and collaborate with them in decision-making processes. This initiative not only aims to improve the quality of care but also to foster a more compassionate and responsive healthcare environment.
As part of this approach, NHS England is embracing ‘health and wellbeing coaches’ to help patients take control of their health. Is a Personalised Care Institute-accredited course required outside NHS England?
Outside of NHS England, it is not universally required for all healthcare professionals to have completed a course accredited by the Personalised Care Institute (PCI).
While specific roles or initiatives within other NHS jurisdictions may encourage or recommend PCI-accredited training, the requirements can vary depending on the position and the context of care being provided.
