Sleep Well Coach Training
About Lesson

What is Sleep Coaching?

Sleep coaching is about getting people to sleep well by identifying patterns and behaviours which impact upon poor sleep. You can help identify issues and disturbances which disrupt sleep, help clients to understand circadian rhythm, sleep drive and how their chronotype could be impacting upon their sleep schedule. With your client you work together to create an actionable sleep plan which takes into account your clients lifestyle and what they are willing to commit to. As a coach you may offer suggestions about designing a better sleep bedroom environment, creating health routines and utilising relaxation tools.

This sleep coaching training is aimed to help people who would describe themselves as poor sleepers and want to find ways to sleep well to have more energy and better mood throughout the day. Your client may present with difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, wake up in the middle of the night and find it hard to get back to sleep, waking up too early and being unable to get back to sleep and/or getting non-refreshing sleep.

Scope of Practice

Your scope of practice determines what you talk about with a client, what advice you give them and how you conduct yourself with a client.

It can refer to a legal scope of practice as in what you are allowed to do or not do as defined by law.

With this in mind as coaches we help people to find solutions and strategies, to make a plan and take action steps to move forward within their life as they work towards their goals. We work in partnership with the client rather than take a directive you must do this approach. We focus upon the present challenges to create change.

Sleep coaching incorporates cognitive (thinking) practices and behavioural (action) practices but it isn’t a substitute for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or CBT for insomnia (CBTi) which is delivered by a licensed psychologist or psychotherapist.

Sleep coaches do not diagnose sleep disorders (they are outlined in this course for reference) or prescribe medication to help sleep. This is done by a medical practitioner.

You may wish to build up a referral network if you have a client whose sleep issue is beyond the scope of coaching.
