About Lesson

Revenge procrastination in relation to bedtime describes the decision to sacrifice sleep in pursuit of a leisure activity or fun as they feel they have missed out on it in the day. This is similar to FOMO.

The problem is by staying up that little bit later then you get insufficient sleep. This overtime, leads to sleep deprivation and negative effects on an individual’s wellbeing.

For it to be revenge bedtime procrastination, there needs to be three things in place:

  1. A delay in going to bed.
  2. Having no significant reason to stay up rather than go to bed.
  3. An awareness that staying up late will interfere with your sleep and you know that you won’t get enough sleep.

People can procrastinate sleep by either doing things in the evening or by going to bed and putting off going to sleep by reading for too long, playing video games, watching TV in bed, using their phone as entertainment.

Revenge procrastination is a new field of research and there are varying reasons why people do it – from feeling they have missed out on something in the day, to having low self-control, to the fact that they are a night owl fitting into a day not designed for them.
