About Lesson
Whilst sunshine may not always be in supply (especially in the depths of winter), it’s a good idea to get light into the eyes upon waking.
This signals to the brain it’s time to wake-up and is an important cue for our sleep cycle as it sets our circadian rhythm.
If it’s a sunny day then the best thing is to go outside and soak up the sun.
Even on a gloomy day and dawn has broken, then wrap up and get some light by going outside for a short walk.
Or if it all feels a bit too much to go outside then open the curtains/blind and look at the light.
Alternative ways to get light exposure when it’s dark in the morning:
- The use of a light box. Whilst they don’t give off as much luminance as sunlight, they can be of benefit.
- Switch the lights on so you are signalling to the brain it’s time to wake up.
- Use a sunrise alarm clock.
